You Don’t Have to Quit the Hard Way

Quitting cold turkey isn't your only option; there are tools that can make quitting easier on your body and your brain. Learn how patches, gum, and other options can support your body while you build new habits.

What Is Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)?

It's Good to Have Backup.

When you're trying to change behaviors or routines, or quit something altogether, it's important to be able to fill that space or time or behavior with a healthier alternative: Using backup replacements can help your new behavior stick a lot more effectively (and with less difficulty.) Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) gives your body a low, steady dose of nicotine without all the toxic chemicals in cigarettes or vapes. It helps you manage cravings and withdrawal while you focus on changing the habits that go with nicotine use.

Types of NRT Products

What People Use Instead of Lighting Up

  • Patches – Worn on the skin; release nicotine slowly throughout the day. Great for people with steady use patterns.

  • Gum – Chewed to release nicotine when cravings hit. Good for those who want something physical to do.

  • Lozenges – Dissolve in the mouth over time. Helpful if gum isn’t an option.

  • Inhalers / Nasal Sprays – Fast-acting but often require a prescription. Best for intense or unpredictable cravings.

Note: ELEMENT does not distribute these products directly, but you can find them at most pharmacies or through local programs. Many insurance plans cover them.

Who Might NRT Be Right For?

Is Replacing Nicotine Something That Might Work for You?

If you’ve tried quitting before, this might be the missing piece. If any of the following scenarios sound like they fit you, switching to a nicotine replacement could help you on the path to quitting for good.

Example scenarios:

  • You’ve tried quitting cold turkey before and struggled

  • You smoke or vape regularly throughout the day

  • You want to cut back before quitting completely

  • You’re looking for physical support while managing stress or routines

  • You prefer a plan that combines behavior change + body support

You don’t have to know for sure; talking with a counselor can help you figure it out.

Where to Find NRT

Where You Can Find This Stuff (Without a Lot of Hassle)

Here’s where to look (and who might be able to help you get it covered.)

  • Over-the-counter options are available at most pharmacies, grocery stores, and big box retailers.

  • Some nicotine replacement options (like inhalers or sprays) require a prescription from a provider.

  • Colorado Quitline offers nicotine replacement resources to eligible participants. Visit coquitline.org or call 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

  • Your primary care provider or community health center may also have resources.
